CHORUS FAQ

Overview

Welcome to the Chorus!

As the recently deceased, now without body or trope to define you, you've been relegated to a part you can do! (Did you really think Father would finally let you rest when you're dead?) Your character will wake up on Monday a little bit different than they were before...

Chorus exist in a liminal state between the state of being a member of the Troupe, and the state of being an Extra: their individual identities have grown fuzzy (but they retain enough to be playable, making them close to Troupe), but are not totally lost (and thus are not Extras)—and yet, they straddle the fence of the walled garden of the play, Theatre Paradis, and the Audience: in losing the trappings of character they become privy to the goings-on of the story, and they may surpass it with an understanding of the setting normally relegated to the Audience.

But if Chorus do not try to retake themselves, they may become lost to the story forever, and become an Extra. This is what Extras are: former members of the Troupe. There are many ways to become Extras, from those who became Chorus but failed to regain themselves, to members of the Troupe who never regained their secrets or chose to stay behind.

As a member of the Chorus, you now know and exist as the following:

In the final moments of their death, as their vision started to fade, all those who died saw the same thing: Sika Madu, in a grand, seraphim form, watching over them. He seemed to be both there and not - spectral and spiritual, but certainly there. You're sure of it. His smile was kind, and his eyes were gentle, but cold. He seemed to be watching your dying with intrigue. Though clearly angelic, his presence felt distinctly unholy.

Members of the Chorus know everything stated above. They are self-aware of their condition (that they were a member of the Troupe once, and now have fuzzy memories) and now know of the risk other Troupe members face. Chorus may do what they will with this information, or nothing at all.

Members of the Chorus cannot share any Chorus-only information, such as the information above, or who killed them, with members of the Troupe. If they attempt, it comes out as gobbledygook to the Troupe—censored, or gibberish, or [ LOUD SIREN DROWNS OUT DIALOGUE ], or similar. They can share it uncensored with other members of the Chorus in Chorus-only spaces, such as a Chorus-only PC.

If members of the Chorus wish to help or sabotage the Troupe, they're going to have to do it without spilling spoilers directly. This is why the shadow girls you see speaking in speech bubbles seem to wend and wind around the point when they have something important to say. (For example, this rumor board was a warning in skit format about Sika Madu. This is akin to how the Chorus in Utena conveys lessons and warnings through abstract skits.)

Chorus members will forget their name, and the specifics of their history—though they will still remember it, if perhaps in a hazy, dream-like manner (at your discretion; whatever remains playable).

For example, Sasuke may still remember his clan was killed, that his brother did it, and how that made him felt, but he may not remember the faces of the dead, or the name and face of his brother. You can make their fuzzy memories more or less severe, again, depending on what you think is fun or playable.

Chorus members still are missing their own secret, and the secret's associated memory. However, while your memories are fuzzy, your partner's memory/secret is crystal clear, as is information you've learned while at the Conservatoire and about other Troupe members, including other members of the Chorus. Sucks to not remember who killed your clan but remember Bob's favorite parfait syrups and how many strawberries he wants on it.

Chorus members understand that they must find their partner, regain their secret, and have others learn more about them, to regain their identities and return home. If they don't, they may not be able to return home, and may become an Extra.

Members of the Chorus literally become talking shadows in the silhouette of your character. Your silhouette may change or warp depending on your character's mood or without them realizing, your "clothes" may change, and you can produce shadow puppet props at will.

You cannot interact with the physical world normally, but you can still see, talk, and hear normally.

You do not experience physical sensation, nor do you experience hunger, a need to breathe, etc. You feel real and not real all at once, like a ghost.

Your shadow appears to be cast from somewhere, but no one can ever find the source.

Members of the Chorus can go anywhere in the tower so long as light is cast, and they can follow the physics of a shadow: if a light makes their shadow super long against a tall building, they can, indeed, "stretch" up to talk to someone at the top. They can also slide under closed doorways if their shadow is cast under the bottom of it. The rule of thumb is "Would this be fun/funny/fair?"

Members of the Chorus can become talking, sentient cars. I'm not joking. Your car design is up to you; it does not have to be a real or realistic car, and it can have frills and accessories as you like.

TL;DR, for you guys, being able to transform into a car represents a sense of maturity and enlightenment; existing outside of the confines of the play and gaining knowledge those trapped within it are not privy to. You know Extras have lost the ability to turn into cars, but can be forced into maturing into cars before they're ready (does that sound kind of scummy? it is!).

Chorus can drive anywhere up and down the inverted tower— along stairways, up and down buildings, along pathways, etc. However, your car cannot fit through doorways or into rooms that are too small for cars.

You can swap freely between shadow and car form at will.

ღ

Other people can drive you, but only if you allow it. You're in control, and can eject people through whatever Loony Toons hijinks you want (or by swapping back to shadow form.)

As a car, your keys are always in the ignition, and share a ring with your dorm key. You can't fit through your dorm door as a car, but it will open for you automatically (if you will it) as you approach, so you can enter as a shadow.

You can feel physical sensations as a car. It's up to you how being a car feels. It can be an odd experience, a freeing experience, an empowering experience, a sensual experience... the world is your oyster (gas station?)

Extras will not acknowledge or notice you in either form. You can literally yap at them as a shadow or mow them down as a car and they will not get injured or notice, they will just get up and continue their day. The only ones who can acknowledge you directly are the Troupe. (You can also injure them if you run them over, as normal. However, they will not die or grow more injured than they were from the first impact, no matter how much you run them over.)

As a shadow, Chorus can go unconscious if submerged in total darkness, and end up softlocked in a dark location temporarily. This can last anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours, at player discretion. After which point, they will find themself waking up somewhere where light exists.

Chorus do not need to sleep, but can choose to sleep by simply trying to sleep like they normally would. It does work. If they are sleeping, they won't be forcefully woken up when reappearing into a lit area.

Chorus can bypass pitch black areas by turning into a car (in other words, you can just drive across the bottom of the crypt-canals to get to your dorm docks, it's fine,)

Chorus members can still comment on public posts, post to the forums, and participate in PCs.

Chorus members cannot directly participate in trial discussions, but there will be a header for them to popcorn under in trial posts. OOCly, please do take care not to have your character get into trial theorizing/suggestions under the Chorus header. If your character can't help themselves, they will find their words come out as gobbledygook again: gibberish, censored, [ LOUD SIREN DROWNS OUT DIALOGUE ], etc.

Chorus members cannot participate in weekly tasks (Monday), but can take part in weekly events (Wednesday). They can participate in the forums with the same username they had when they were alive, and the censorship of "spoilery" information is the same as above. (Even over text, spoilery information comes out as gobbledygook still: gibberish, censored, [ AN ADMINISTRATOR HAS REMOVED THIS CONTENT ], etc.)

Graveyard

This post also serves as your graveyard PC. After an individual's body is cremated, they wake up on Monday (when the weekly post goes up) as a Chorus shadow in the rose garden. They will find their grave blank, their plot empty, and the roses in their color missing. From there, they can travel through the inverted tower freely.

Thus, while this post doesn't while it doesn't exist in a specific or unique location, you may use it to converse in private or as a group among your fellow deceased.

Hello, hello! So Chorus will have the option to fully participate in the finale on Sunday, 09/07!

❥ After a filtering-in period, the finale will start with the Chorus reassembly, which will allow Chorus to rejoin the ranks of the fleshy living. This is slated to start at ~2 PM EDT and run until ~4 PM EDT. While the Chorus can be absent for this period, Chorus are very welcome to be active participants in this segment!

❥ After the Chorus reassembly period, Chorus will be able to participate in the rest of the finale as normal! However, should you be unable to be around for post-reassembly, we would like permission to handwave that your Chorus character is present in the follow-up for very important reasons! They will have a role, like the execution Brides, where they will participate in a passive but visible role if permission is granted. They won't be assumed to be making any significant decisions.

Yesterday, through my efforts, I have learned that Sika Madu is unaware that Mikaela is some eldritch abomination at heart. I believe we should make use of this.

Other than our Dramaturge love bleeding their blue blood enough to fill a lake and that as long as we have a gas tank, we can drink whatever we please, provided that someone pours it in there for us, that is all I have.

Did anyone else discover anything in the meantime?

[Annette is still incredibly clumsy in her car body, kind of stopping and going jerkily, but she's getting better! She's trying her best.]

I did notice that Mikaela had quite the alarming shadow...but how would you propose we use this?

[And she's not sure she wants to, admittedly. Jury's still out. Hopefully Car Town Hall will help her decide exactly how to move forward in her own heart.]

I believe that we need some leverage over them. And given how much they care about nothing else but the "bird infant"...

However, they could be twisted enough that they don't care that Mikaela is that, thinking that Mikaela is Mikaela no matter what form he takes.

When I talked to Mikaela, or...the creature calling itself that...it sounds as if he's convinced he'll be rejected as soon as they learn the truth. So, no, I have a feeling that they won't deny it once they see for themselves.

[It's sad, really. Maybe she's just a bleeding heart.]

I suppose that makes sense. Mikaela looked like he was trying to keep up the facade when Sika Madu was watching or around. While I understand that if a child wanted approval from their parent while hiding what is negative about themselves...

Did he convey emotions while telling that to you?

He sounded sad, scared, desperate, and conflicted. To me, it seemed sincere...

[Those tears didn't feel fake, though perhaps she just couldn't stand to see any kind of apparent child cry.]

I think perhaps he truly does simply want to be loved, but doesn't understand how to do so in a healthy way. But with how long this seems to have been going on, I don't know that he'll be able to learn any better.

It feels wrong to exploit this...but I know we can't do nothing, either.

I won't deny that exploiting a seemingly child's feelings feels wrong. However, the Dramaturge making us go through all this is just as equally wrong, if not worse... I'm not interested in the weight of morality right now, but rather the concern of everyone's well-being and whether we will still exist after this fiasco as ourselves and not a shadow of ourselves.

As messed up as it sounds, we just have to act. We can't end up as extras, and neither can anyone else in this tower. I tried to warn them, but no matter how many times I tried, I could only say nonsense.

I think once we figure out a plan of action, we should avoid talking to Sika Madu at all. I'm not the only one who noticed that...strange quality of their voice, right?

We also tried our best... through charades, music hints, and more. It only seems to get through to people who are willing to look at multiple perspectives.

But, yes. That's right. There was something in their voice that unnerved me. It didn't happen only once, so I remember the feeling...

I have heard of parahumans with that kinda power. Something about making themselves harder to attack, or be perceived as less of a threat. They don't tend to be, uh...heroes.

If no one's done it already, the instructions about how we can have our secrets returned to us isn't a trick. They really can be returned.

I don't know about "need", but for us it was. The secret I had for Elan— [ how does he say this? ] —it just felt wrong to have it after a while. It was like I wanted him to understand something that he should have already known.

Then if I have to say, my guess it's a bit of both. [ hmmm. ] At the start, I felt compelled to be with Elan, probably due to the nature of his secret, but after a while it felt less...like that.

I wanted him to understand that he wasn't just "some Elan" to me, and that it was not just because of the secret I held.
